Best Chai Tea (2026)

Chai is Hindi for "tea" — but Western markets use the word to mean masala chai: spiced black tea with milk and sugar, brewed strong, traditionally simmered with cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and black pepper. It's the most-drunk hot beverage in India and one of the fastest-growing tea categories in the U.S.

FAQ

What's in masala chai spice mix?
Classic masala: cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and black pepper. Some blends add fennel, nutmeg, or star anise. The spice ratio varies by region — South Indian chai uses more cardamom; North Indian chai uses more black pepper and ginger.
Is chai latte healthy?
Black tea + spices is healthy on its own. Cafe chai lattes can have 30-50g sugar from syrups + sweetened concentrate. Brew at home with whole milk and 1 tsp honey for a healthier version with the same warmth.
How do you make a chai latte?
1 part chai concentrate + 1 part steamed milk = lazy version. Or brew 2 bags of chai in 4oz water for 5 min, add 4oz steamed milk, sweeten = traditional version. Stovetop simmered chai (recipe above) is the gold standard.
Best chai for milk lattes?
Tazo Classic Chai (bagged) or Oregon Chai Original (concentrate) for everyday lattes. Rishi Masala Chai or Harney Indian Spice Chai for premium upgrade.

Varieties

Chai Tea styles, explained

The 1 sub-styles of chai tea — each with its own brewing parameters, flavor, and best-of brands.

The chai you find in American grocery stores splits into three formats: tea bags (Tazo, Twinings, Stash) — convenient, decent flavor; liquid concentrate (Oregon Chai, Tazo) — mix 1:1 with milk for instant chai latte; loose-leaf masala (Rishi, Harney) — most authentic, brews into the strongest cup with the deepest spice expression.

For daily Starbucks-level chai, the concentrate route is fastest. For serious coffeehouse-quality chai, brew strong loose-leaf masala chai with whole milk and a little sweetener. The spice ratio is the differentiator: more cardamom is more sophisticated, more cinnamon is more cozy, more ginger is more warming. Our rankings cover all three formats.

Chai Tea buyer's guide

Bagged vs. concentrate vs. loose

Bagged chai: easiest, $4-7 per 20-bag box. Strong-enough flavor, milk-friendly. Concentrate: 1:1 mix with milk, $6-8 per 32oz box, makes ~16 lattes. Best for quick-and-good. Loose leaf: $13-17 per 3oz, brews much stronger and more authentic. Best for serious chai drinkers.

Spice profile — cardamom forward vs. cinnamon forward

Cardamom-forward (Tazo Classic, Rishi Masala): South Indian style, sophisticated, slightly sweet. Cinnamon-forward (Bigelow Vanilla Chai, Tazo Vanilla Chai): more accessible, dessert-like. Ginger-forward (Harney Indian Spice): warming, slightly spicy. Try one of each to find your preference.

How to brew authentic stovetop chai

Bring 1 cup water + 1 cup milk to a simmer. Add 2 teaspoons loose-leaf masala chai, 4 cardamom pods, 1 cinnamon stick, 2 cloves, 1 slice fresh ginger. Simmer 5-7 minutes. Strain into a mug. Sweeten to taste. Takes 10 minutes total and the flavor rivals any cafe.

Decaf chai

Several brands offer decaf chai (Bigelow Vanilla Chai Decaf, Tazo Decaf Chai). The full spice profile remains; only the black tea base is decaffeinated. Pukka Turmeric Active is naturally caffeine-free if you want a turmeric-forward herbal "chai."

Sweetener

Traditional chai is sweetened. Indian street chai uses 2+ tablespoons of sugar per 12oz. American chai shops use about 1 tablespoon. Honey, agave, and condensed milk all work. Sugar-free chai exists but the spice can taste sharp without sweetener to balance.

Caffeine

Chai is brewed strong — typically 60-70mg caffeine per 12oz when made with 2 bags or 2 teaspoons leaf. Roughly 75% of a cup of coffee. Decaf options are widely available.
