Tea Bag Price Index (July 2026): Cost Per Cup, Measured
We pulled the live Amazon price of 162 in-stock bagged teas through the Amazon Creators API, divided each by its bag count, and ranked every single one by cost per cup. This is the site's original dataset: what a cup of tea actually costs in July 2026, brand by brand.

As of July 2026, a cup of bagged tea costs anywhere from about 5 cents to $2.50. The average across the 162 verified, in-stock teas in this index is 33.9¢ per cup, and the median is 27.9¢. Every number on this page comes from a live Amazon price we pulled ourselves on July 21, 2026 through the Amazon Creators API, divided by the bag count stated on the listing. Nothing is estimated, nothing is copied from another site.
The spread is the story. The cheapest verified cup, Tetley British Blend in the 320-count box, works out to 4.7¢ per cup ($15.15 for 320 bags). The priciest, Starbucks Teavana Peach Tranquility sachets, lands at $2.50 per cup, roughly 53 times as much. Both steep in the same mug of hot water.
Below you'll find average cost per cup by category, the cheapest and priciest verified cups on Amazon right now, the budget-vs-premium gap measured brand by brand, and the full ranked table of all 162 teas, every row linking to the exact listing we priced. If you want the taste side of the ledger, our best tea bags roundup and black tea guide rank these same brands on flavor.
The short version
- A cup of bagged tea costs 4.7¢ to $2.50 on Amazon as of July 21, 2026; the average across 162 verified teas is 33.9¢ and the median is 27.9¢.
- The cheapest verified cup is Tetley British Blend, 320 bags for $15.15, which is 4.7¢ per cup.
- Black tea is by far the cheapest category, averaging 16.3¢ per cup across 27 teas; green tea averages 41.5¢ and herbal 35.4¢.

- Loose leaf is usually cheaper per cup than bags from the same brand: Dilmah's 400g loose pouch works out to about 6 cents per cup versus 15.5 cents for its 100-count bags.
The headline numbers
We checked 201 Amazon listings that this site links to across its reviews and buying guides, kept the 162 that were in stock with a live price and a verifiable bag count, and computed cost per cup as live price divided by total bags (one bag = one cup; brewing method doesn't change the math).
| Metric | Value (July 21, 2026) |
|---|---|
| Teas verified in stock | 162 |
| Average cost per cup | 33.9¢ |
| Median cost per cup | 27.9¢ |
| Cheapest cup | 4.7¢ (Tetley British Blend, 320 ct) |
| Priciest cup | $2.50 (Teavana Peach Tranquility, 24 sachets) |
| Average box price | $18.37 |
Put another way: at the median, a cup-a-day tea habit costs about 102 dollars a year. At the cheapest verified cup it's about 17 dollars a year, and even the priciest cup in the entire index costs $2.50, which is still less than a typical coffee-shop drink.
Average cost per cup by category
Category is destiny in tea pricing. Plain black tea is dominated by huge British-style value boxes (240 and 320 counts), while green tea skews toward smaller Japanese import boxes and whole-leaf pyramid bags, and herbal blends sit in between.
| Category | Teas verified | Average cost per cup | Cheapest | Priciest |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Black tea | 27 | 16.3¢ | 4.7¢ | 44.4¢ |
| Decaf | 10 | 17.2¢ | 7.4¢ | 48.3¢ |
| Chai | 4 | 24.4¢ | 21.9¢ | 25.8¢ |
| White tea | 2 | 25.0¢ | 16.8¢ | 33.1¢ |
| Herbal & caffeine-free | 55 | 35.4¢ | 7.1¢ | 87.4¢ |
| Earl Grey | 12 | 36.2¢ | 12.0¢ | 65.5¢ |
| English Breakfast | 9 | 36.5¢ | 11.3¢ | 96.0¢ |
| Green tea | 29 | 41.5¢ | 9.3¢ | $1.50 |
| Samplers & assortments | 7 | 54.1¢ | 20.0¢ | $1.04 |
| Oolong | 2 | 37.5¢ | 8.5¢ | 66.6¢ |
| Pu-erh | 1 | 7.2¢ | 7.2¢ | 7.2¢ |
| Other flavored | 4 | 89.0¢ | 30.0¢ | $2.50 |
Three things stand out. First, black tea is the bargain of the aisle: 16.3¢ per cup on average, with a floor under a nickel, thanks to the big British blends we cover in the Tetley, PG Tips, and Yorkshire Tea reviews. Second, green tea costs about 2.6x as much as black per cup (41.5¢ average): the category is full of imported Japanese sencha, genmaicha, and hojicha in 16-to-20-bag boxes, the format we break down in our best green tea guide. Third, named black styles carry a premium over plain black: Earl Grey averages 36.2¢ and English Breakfast 36.5¢, roughly double the plain-black average, because both categories include several whole-leaf and organic picks. Decaf, notably, averages 17.2¢, barely above regular black.

The top of this list is effectively a British breakfast-table roll call. It's also why our Lipton vs Tetley and PG Tips vs Tetley comparisons keep coming back to value per cup: at these counts, the price difference between brands is real money over a year.
The priciest cups, verified
At the other end of the index, whole-leaf sachets and specialty imports command coffee-shop money per cup:
| # | Brand | Product | Type | Live price | Bags | Cost per cup |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Teavana | Starbucks Teavana Tea Sachets (Peach Tranquility, Pack of 24... | Other flavored | $59.99 | 24 | $2.50 |

| 5 | Tazo | Tazo Awake English Breakfast Tea, 24 Tea Bags,2.1 Oz | English Breakfast | $23.05 | 24 | 96.0¢ |
A caveat that matters: these are live Amazon listing prices, and some specialty boxes on Amazon are sold by third parties at above shelf price, the Teavana sachets being the clearest example. That's still the real price an Amazon buyer pays today, which is exactly what this index measures.

Loose leaf vs tea bags: which is cheaper per cup?
This index measures bags, but we priced several loose-leaf listings from the same brands on the same day, using the standard 2 grams of leaf per cup. Same-brand comparisons:
| Brand | Bagged (verified) | Loose leaf (same day) |
|---|---|---|
| Dilmah | Premium Ceylon 100 ct, $15.50 = 15.5¢/cup | Premium Ceylon 400g pouch, $11.85 = about 6¢/cup (~200 cups) |
| Vahdam | Himalayan Green 100 ct, $24.99 = 25¢/cup | Himalayan Green 12 oz, $29.99, listed at 170+ cups = about 18¢/cup |
| Yamamotoyama | Green Tea 16 ct, $6.60 = 41¢/cup | Organic Sencha 3.5 oz, $11.69 = about 24¢/cup (~49 cups) |
In all three same-brand checks, loose leaf came out meaningfully cheaper per cup, roughly 30 to 60 percent less, and the gap grows if you re-steep, which good loose leaf tolerates and paper bags mostly don't. The trade is convenience and gear. The full argument, including when bags genuinely win, is in our loose leaf vs tea bags explainer and best loose leaf guide.
Methodology
- Source: live product data from the Amazon Creators API (getItems), pulled July 21, 2026, for the Amazon listings this site links to across its reviews and guides.
- Sample: 201 listings checked; 162 qualified: in stock (or low stock) with a live price and a bag count verifiable from the listing title.
- Cost per cup = live listing price ÷ total tea bags in the listing (multi-box packs counted at their full combined bag count). One bag = one cup.
- Excluded: out-of-stock and unpriced listings, loose-leaf tins and pouches (covered separately above at 2g per cup), family-size and gallon-size iced-tea bags (they brew quarts, not cups), pods, and listings whose pack math couldn't be verified.
- Categories were assigned from the listing's own description (Earl Grey and English Breakfast are broken out of plain black; decaf and samplers are kept separate so they don't skew the caffeinated averages).
- Caveats: Amazon prices move daily and some listings are third-party sellers priced above shelf price; the index reflects what an Amazon buyer paid on the pull date. Averages are unweighted (each tea counts once).
Questions, answered
How much does a cup of tea cost?
Using live Amazon prices from July 21, 2026, a cup of bagged tea costs between about 5 cents and $2.50. The average across the 162 in-stock teas we verified is 34 cents per cup, and the median is about 28 cents. Plain black tea is cheapest, averaging 16 cents per cup.
What is the cheapest tea per cup?
The cheapest verified cup in our July 2026 index is Tetley British Blend in the 320-count box: $15.15 for 320 bags, or 4.7 cents per cup. Big-box British black teas dominate the cheap end; PG Tips Original and Yorkshire Red both come in under 7 cents per cup at their largest counts.
Is loose leaf tea cheaper than tea bags?
Usually yes, per cup, when you compare the same brand. On same-day prices, Dilmah loose leaf worked out to about 6 cents per cup versus 15.5 cents for its bags, Vahdam about 18 versus 25 cents, and Yamamotoyama about 24 versus 41 cents, assuming a standard 2 grams of leaf per cup. Loose leaf also re-steeps, stretching the gap further.
Why is green tea more expensive than black tea per cup?
In our index green tea averages 41 cents per cup versus 16 cents for black, about 2.6x. The black tea aisle is anchored by enormous value boxes (240 to 320 bags), while green tea skews toward imported Japanese teas and whole-leaf pyramid bags sold in 15-to-20-bag boxes, so the per-cup price runs higher even when the per-box price looks similar.
Are premium tea bags worth the money?
That's a taste call, but here is the measured cost: budget brands Tetley and PG Tips average 16 cents per cup while premium teapigs and Kusmi average 58 cents, a 3.7x gap that widens to roughly 7 to 9x on flagship breakfast blends. Even so, a 50-cent premium cup is still far cheaper than any coffee-shop drink, so the upgrade costs dollars per month, not per day.
How much does a box of tea cost on average?
Across the 162 verified listings in this index, the average box price on Amazon was $18.37 in July 2026. But box price is a poor guide to value: the $15.15 Tetley box (320 bags) costs less per cup than boxes half its price, which is why this index ranks by cost per cup instead.
