How we test

The lab report first. Everything else after.

The tea aisle is full of premium-sounding promises and origin stories nobody checks. Here is exactly how we decide what gets ranked, what gets flagged, and what gets left off entirely.

01

We buy it and brew it

Every tea we rank, we actually steep — usually a box we bought at retail, the same one you would. We follow the tea's proper water temperature and steep time, because a green tea scalded at boiling and an under-steeped black are a different drink entirely. Nothing earns a ranking off the box copy alone.

02

Origin, grade, and sourcing

Brands love to say "single-origin," "first flush," or "ceremonial grade." We check those claims against what the brand actually documents — stated origin, leaf grade, harvest, and how the tea is sourced. When the paperwork backs the claim, we say so. When it's marketing with nothing behind it, we say that too.

03

What's actually in the cup

We taste each tea black and, where it's the point, with milk. We score aroma, body, briskness or smoothness, and how it holds up to a second steep. We describe what the cup is actually like in plain terms — never health outcomes.

04

The human taste panel

A spec sheet can't tell you whether you'll finish the cup. People who actually drink tea every day score every pick blind where we can, and we weigh agreement, not one editor's palate. The everyday cup matters as much as the special-occasion one.

05

Cost per cup, then re-review

We work out a real per-cup price for every pick — bags, loose leaf, and matcha alike — because value is part of the verdict. And brands reformulate, change blends, and shrink the count in a box; a ranking from last year is a rumor. We revisit verdicts on a rolling basis, and every guide carries the date it was last reviewed.

What we don't do: no pay-to-play, no sponsored verdicts, no placements for sale. We earn affiliate commissions when you buy through some of our links, but rankings are set before monetization is considered, and an affiliate relationship never reorders a list. See the full disclosure.

The honest limits:we steep and taste, but we don't run a laboratory — our checks on origin and grade are only as good as what brands actually document (which is exactly why we reward the ones that disclose more). And nothing here is medical advice: if you're pregnant, sensitive to caffeine, or have a health condition, talk to a doctor about what fits you.
