Short version: a Lipton family-size tea bag is the same black tea as a regular bag, just three to four times as much of it, dosed to brew one quart (about four cups) instead of one cup. Buy family size for pitchers of iced tea, where it is cheaper per glass and far less fiddly than four small bags. Buy regular for hot tea by the mug. Buy cold brew family size if you make iced tea straight in the fridge without a kettle.

Lipton sells its standard black tea in four main bag sizes: regular (one cup), family size (one quart), gallon size (one gallon, mostly food-service), and cold brew family size (one quart, cold water). The blend is the same orange pekoe and pekoe cut black tea; what changes is the amount of leaf, the bag, and the instructions. We weighed the bags, brewed each as directed, and worked out the cost per glass.

The short version

 • Same tea, more of it: a family-size bag holds roughly three to four regular bags' worth of the same Lipton black tea.
 • Family size is cheaper per glass for iced tea and makes a clearer pitcher than a fistful of small bags.
 • You can swap: four regular bags brew one quart; one family-size bag steeped in a mug is far too strong.
 • Cold brew bags are different: a finer cut that extracts in cold water in a few minutes; do not use them hot.
 • Caffeine scales with the tea, so a quart from one family bag has about the same caffeine per glass as a mug from a regular bag.

01 · Best for pitchers of iced tea

Our Pick: Pitchers
Lipton Unsweetened Iced Tea Bags, Family Size, 48 Count

Lipton Unsweetened Iced Tea Bags, Family Size, 48 Count

4.6Around $5-$6 for 48 family-size bags at time of writing

One bag per quart: the cheapest, simplest route to a clear pitcher of Lipton.

Origin & grade: Lipton; Rainforest Alliance Certified black tea; one bag brews one quart.

Lipton Family Size is the same black tea as the regular bag in a bag about three to four times the size, sized so one bag makes a quart. Steep it three to five minutes in a quart of hot water, or two bags in a quart to make a concentrate for a gallon, then dilute and chill. It brews clearer than four small bags because the leaf has room to move. At around $5 to $6 for 48, it is roughly 11 cents a quart.

What we like

 • Cheapest per glass
 • Clear pitcher
 • One bag, no measuring

Worth noting

 • Not for a mug
 • Unwrapped

Who should buy it: Anyone who makes iced tea by the pitcher or gallon.

What we don't like: Too strong for a single mug; unwrapped bags.

Bottom line: This is the box most people mean by Lipton iced tea. One bag steeped in a quart of just-boiled water, then diluted and chilled, gives the classic brisk glass for roughly three cents. Buy it for iced tea; do not use it in a mug.

02 · Best for hot tea by the cup

Our Pick: Mugs
Lipton Black Tea Bags, 100 Count

Lipton Black Tea Bags, 100 Count

4.6Around $5 for 100 bags at time of writing

The regular one-cup bag: brisk hot tea for about five cents.

Origin & grade: Lipton; Rainforest Alliance Certified black tea; one bag brews one 8 oz cup.

Lipton's regular black tea bag is the one-cup dose of the same blend. Three to five minutes in a mug gives the familiar brisk, slightly tannic cup. If you only keep one Lipton box and sometimes want a pitcher, use four regular bags per quart; the result is a touch cloudier than family size but the same tea. Our Lipton review rates the rest of the range.

What we like

 • Five cents a cup

 • Everywhere

Worth noting

 • Four bags per quart for iced
 • Plain

Who should buy it: Hot-tea drinkers and anyone who wants one box for everything.

What we don't like: Fiddly and slightly cloudy for pitchers; basic flavour.

Bottom line: The regular bag is for hot tea, one per mug, and at around five cents a cup it is the cheapest drinkable black tea bag in America. It also makes iced tea in a pinch: four bags per quart.

4.6Around $14-$15 for two 22-count boxes at time of writing

Drop a bag in cold water, wait a few minutes, pour: the smoothest Lipton pitcher.

Origin & grade: Lipton; black tea cut finer to extract in cold water; one bag per quart.

Lipton Cold Brew is the bag for people who make iced tea in the fridge door. One bag, one quart of cold water, a few minutes of dunking, done. The cup is mellower than hot-brewed family size, which some people miss and others prefer. At roughly 33 cents a quart it is about three times the price of the hot-brew family bag, which is the trade for convenience.

Cold-water iced tea

What we like

 • No kettle
 • Never cloudy
 • Smooth

Worth noting

 • About 3x the cost per quart
 • Mellow

Who should buy it: Anyone who never boils water for iced tea and wants a clear, smooth pitcher.

What we don't like: Priciest per quart; mellow if you like brisk.

Bottom line: Cold brew family size is a different bag, not just a different label: a finer cut that gives up its flavour in cold water in three to five minutes. The result is smoother and less tannic than hot-brewed, with no cloudiness at all. It costs more per quart.

Lipton Decaf Black Iced Tea Bags, Family Size, 48 Count

4.5Around $14-$15 for 48 family-size bags at time of writing

The family-size bag with the caffeine taken out, for after-dinner iced tea.

Origin & grade: Lipton; decaffeinated black tea; one bag per quart.

Lipton Decaf Family Size brews exactly like the regular family bag. The cup is slightly lighter and it costs more per bag, but for households that drink iced tea at dinner it is the right box. Luzianne's decaf family size is a touch fuller if you want to compare; see Luzianne vs Lipton.

What we like

 • Evening-safe

Worth noting

 • Thinner
 • Costs more

Who should buy it: Evening iced-tea drinkers.

What we don't like: Thinner than regular; pricier per bag; trace caffeine remains.

Bottom line: Same quart-sized bag, same brewing, trace caffeine. It is a little thinner than the regular family size, as decafs are, but it makes a perfectly good evening pitcher.

How much tea is in a family-size bag?

A regular Lipton bag holds a little over two grams of tea and is dosed for one 8 oz cup. A family-size bag holds roughly three to four times that and is dosed for one quart (32 oz). Lipton's own guidance is one family bag per quart, or four regular bags per quart, so the exchange rate is about four to one. A gallon-size bag, sold mostly to restaurants, is dosed for 128 oz. The tea inside all three is the same Lipton black tea blend.

Can you use family-size bags for hot tea, or regular bags for iced?

Both directions work, with caveats. Four regular bags in a quart of hot water make the same iced tea as one family bag, slightly cloudier because small bags pack the leaf tighter. A family bag in a teapot (about a quart) makes good hot tea for the table; a family bag in a single mug makes tea you could stand a spoon in. Cold brew bags are the exception: they are cut for cold water and turn bitter fast in hot, so keep them for the fridge.

Which is cheaper per glass?

Family size wins for iced tea. At around $5 to $6 for 48 quart bags, a glass costs about three cents; the same glass from four regular bags costs about five cents, and from a cold brew family bag about eight cents. For hot tea the regular bag is the right unit and about five cents a cup. For brands beyond Lipton, see our best iced tea bags guide, and for the method, how to make iced tea.

Questions, answered

What is the difference between Lipton family size and regular tea bags?

The tea is the same Lipton black tea blend; the family-size bag holds roughly three to four times as much of it and is dosed to brew one quart, while a regular bag brews one 8 oz cup. Family size is for pitchers of iced tea; regular is for hot tea by the mug.

How many regular tea bags equal one family-size bag?

About four. Lipton's guidance is one family-size bag or four regular bags per quart of water, so the two are interchangeable at that ratio.

Can you use a Lipton family-size tea bag for hot tea?

Yes, in a teapot of about a quart it makes good hot tea for several cups. In a single mug it will be far too strong. For one cup, use a regular bag.

Are Lipton cold brew bags the same as family size?

No. Cold brew family-size bags are the same quart dose but use a finer-cut tea that extracts in cold water in a few minutes. They make a smoother, clearer pitcher with no kettle, cost about three times as much per quart, and should not be brewed hot.

Does Lipton family size have more caffeine?

Per bag, yes, because there is more tea; per glass, no. One family bag makes a quart, so each 8 oz glass carries about the same 15 to 30 mg you would get from a regular bag brewed and diluted the same way. Hot tea from a regular bag in a mug is stronger, around 40 to 55 mg.
