Both brands are old. Tetley started in Yorkshire in 1837 and is now part of Tata Consumer Products; Red Rose was founded in Saint John, New Brunswick in 1894 and the US brand is now made by Harris Tea. Both sell a standard orange pekoe blend as their core product in the US and Canada. We brewed Tetley Classic Blend, Tetley British Blend, and Red Rose Original for four minutes, plain and with milk, and compared strength, smoothness, and price per bag.

Tetley British Blend is what Tetley sells in Britain, more or less, packaged for America. Four minutes gives a dark, malty cup with real body that stands up to whole milk; Red Rose and Tetley Classic both fade by comparison. Bottom line: British Blend is a different tea from Tetley Classic, built on Assam and Kenyan leaf for a darker, fuller cup. With milk it is the best tea in this comparison and it is not close; the 320-count box is also the cheapest per bag.

Red Rose Original tastes like the tea your grandmother made, which is the point. It is a medium-bodied orange pekoe with no rough edges, pleasant plain with a little sugar, fine with a splash of milk, and clear iced. Tetley Classic Blend is the lightest tea here. It brews quickly to a bright, brisk cup that works with a splash of milk and sugar, and it is easy to find. Its weakness is body: at four minutes it is thinner than Red Rose and far thinner than British Blend. Pricing on Amazon swings between single boxes and cases, so check the per-bag cost.

Two orange pekoes, one clear winner each way
Tetley Classic and Red Rose Original are the same idea, a blended orange pekoe for North American tastes, and Red Rose executes it better: rounder, smoother, a hair sweeter, and more pleasant plain. Tetley's trump card is British Blend, a different and stronger tea that has no Red Rose equivalent. So the honest answer to Tetley vs Red Rose is that Red Rose wins the like-for-like and Tetley wins the range, because it sells the one box here we would call genuinely good with milk.
