Oregon Chai vs Tazo Chai: Which Concentrate Is Better? (2026)

Two Portland chai brands born the same year, one carton each in every grocery cold case. We made lattes from both concentrates, hot and iced, with dairy and oat, and brewed the bagged chais too.

Short version: buy Tazo Classic Chai concentrate if you want a spicier, more tea-forward latte with real black tea bite and cardamom and clove that show through milk: it is the closer of the two to a cafe chai. Buy Oregon Chai Original if you want a sweeter, rounder, more vanilla-and-honey latte that kids and chai sceptics tend to prefer, and if you want the Slightly Sweet option to dial the sugar back. Both are around $5 a carton; Tazo wins on spice, Oregon on smoothness.

Both brands started in Portland, Oregon in 1994: Tazo as a tea company later bought by Starbucks and now part of Lipton Teas and Infusions, Oregon Chai as a chai specialist now owned by Kerry. We mixed each concentrate one-to-one with whole milk and with oat milk, served hot and over ice, and checked the labels for sugar and tea content.

The chai products worth buying from each.

01 · Best chai concentrate for spice and tea flavour

Winner: Spice
Tazo Classic Chai Latte Concentrate, 32 oz

Tazo Classic Chai Latte Concentrate, 32 oz

4.5Around $5-$6 per 32 oz carton at time of writing

Cardamom, clove, cinnamon, and actual black tea: the concentrate that tastes like chai.

Origin & grade: Tazo, now Lipton Teas and Infusions; black tea concentrate with spices and cane sugar; the Starbucks chai latte base for many years.

Tazo Classic Chai was the base of the Starbucks chai latte for years and it still tastes like it: cardamom and clove up front, cinnamon and a little black pepper behind, and a proper black-tea backbone. Mixed one-to-one with whole milk and heated it is the closest of the two to a cafe cup; over ice it stays bright where Oregon turns into a milkshake. Sugar is about 20 g per 4 oz of concentrate on the label, similar to Oregon's Original.

Type

Best
Hot or iced lattes

What we like

  • Real spice and tea flavour
  • Holds up iced
  • Cheap per latte
  • Decaf and organic versions

Worth noting

  • A little tannic
  • Sugary

Who should buy it: Anyone who likes chai for the spice and wants the cafe flavour at home.

What we don't like: Slightly tannic; not as smooth as Oregon; still sugary.

Bottom line: Tazo's concentrate leads with spice and keeps the tea underneath it, so a latte tastes like a latte made from tea rather than a flavoured milk. It is less sweet than Oregon and a touch tannic, which spice drinkers read as authenticity.

02 · Best chai concentrate for a smooth, sweet latte

Winner: Smooth
Oregon Chai Original Chai Concentrate, 32 oz

Oregon Chai Original Chai Concentrate, 32 oz

4.5Around $5 per 32 oz carton at time of writing

Vanilla, honey, and gentle spice: the creamiest, most approachable chai latte in a carton.

Origin & grade: Oregon Chai, founded in Portland in 1994, now part of Kerry; black tea concentrate with honey, vanilla, spices, and cane sugar.

Oregon Chai Original is smoother than Tazo in every way: no tannin, less pepper, more vanilla. Hot with whole milk it is a dessert; with oat milk it is the best of the oat-milk lattes we made from either brand. Sugar is the catch, about 21 g per 4 oz serving on the label, which is why the Slightly Sweet carton exists. Our Oregon Chai review goes through the whole range.

Best
Hot lattes, oat milk

What we like

  • Smooth and creamy
  • Very approachable
  • Great with oat milk
  • Slightly Sweet option

Worth noting

  • Sugary
  • Mild spice
  • Little tea character

Who should buy it: Anyone who prefers a sweet, creamy chai, and anyone serving chai to people who do not think they like it.

What we don't like: Sugary; the spice is faint; not much tea flavour.

Bottom line: Oregon Chai is the latte people mean when they say they love chai but not spice. It is rounder, sweeter, and creamier than Tazo, with vanilla and honey doing as much work as the cardamom. Kids and first-timers pick it every time; chai purists do not.

03 · Best lower-sugar chai concentrate

Also Great
Oregon Chai Slightly Sweet Chai Concentrate, 32 oz

Oregon Chai Slightly Sweet Chai Concentrate, 32 oz

4.3Around $6-$11 per carton at time of writing (listing varies)

The Original with the sugar dialled back; the Oregon carton we would actually keep.

Origin & grade: Oregon Chai; same base with less cane sugar.

Oregon Chai Slightly Sweet is what the Original should be: the same vanilla-honey character with room to taste the tea. It is the carton to buy if you drink a chai latte most days. Tazo's equivalent is the Skinny Chai, which is sweetened differently and tastes thinner.

Type
Reduced-sugar chai concentrate
Caffeine
Around 30-40 mg per latte
Mix
1:1 with milk
Best
Daily hot lattes

What we like

  • Less sugar, same texture
  • Tea shows through more

Worth noting

  • Still mild
  • Variable pricing

Who should buy it: Daily chai drinkers who want Oregon's smoothness without the full sugar load.

What we don't like: Still mild on spice; Amazon pricing swings between single cartons and packs.

Bottom line: Slightly Sweet keeps Oregon's smoothness and cuts the sugar meaningfully, which makes it the better everyday carton. The spice is still gentle; if you want heat, this is not the fix.

04 · Best bagged chai of the two brands

Best Bag
Tazo Organic Chai Black Tea Bags, 16 Count

Tazo Organic Chai Black Tea Bags, 16 Count

4.4Around $4-$5 for 16 bags at time of writing

Spiced black tea in a bag; brew it strong, add your own milk and sugar.

Origin & grade: USDA Organic; Tazo; black tea with cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, clove, and black pepper.

Tazo Organic Chai brewed five minutes in half water, half milk makes a good quick masala chai with none of the carton's sugar. It is not as rich as simmering whole spices, but it is the best supermarket chai bag we have tried from either brand. See best chai tea for the wider field.

Type
Spiced black tea bags
Caffeine
Around 40 mg per cup
Organic
USDA Organic
Box
16 bags

What we like

  • Control your own sugar
  • Organic
  • Cheap

Worth noting

  • Small box
  • Lighter than a concentrate

Who should buy it: Anyone who wants chai without 20 g of sugar, or who likes to brew it in milk.

What we don't like: Sixteen to a box; needs a strong steep to match a concentrate.

Bottom line: If you would rather control the sugar, Tazo's bagged chai is the better brewed chai of the two brands: properly spiced, organic, and a quarter a bag. Oregon's bagged chai is milder and harder to find.

Spice versus sweetness: the whole difference

Tazo builds its concentrate around spice and tea; Oregon builds its around vanilla, honey, and texture. Neither is subtle, but they aim at different drinkers. If you order a dirty chai or ask for extra spice at a cafe, Tazo is your carton. If you order a chai because it is the cosy, sweet drink on the menu, Oregon is. Sugar is roughly the same in the two Originals, about 20 g per 4 oz of concentrate, so the choice is about flavour, not health, unless you move to Oregon's Slightly Sweet.

How to make the best latte from either carton

Mix one part concentrate to one part milk. For hot, steam or warm the milk first and pour the concentrate in; boiling the mix together dulls the spice. For iced, shake concentrate and milk over ice. Whole milk gives the creamiest cup, oat milk the best non-dairy one (Oregon especially), and almond milk thins both. A pinch of ground cardamom or a grind of black pepper rescues Oregon for spice fans; a teaspoon of honey rescues Tazo for the sweet-toothed.

Price, caffeine, and the other cartons

Both Originals run about $5 to $6 for a 32 oz carton, which is roughly eight lattes, so well under a dollar each. Caffeine is modest, around 30 to 50 mg per latte, less than a cup of coffee. Tazo also sells Decaf, Organic, Skinny, Vanilla Caramel, and Chocolate concentrates; Oregon sells Slightly Sweet, Sugar Free, Vanilla, and a dry mix. For the category beyond these two, our best chai tea guide and Tazo review rank the rest.

Which should you buy?

Buy Tazo Classic Chai if you want spice, tea flavour, and a latte that tastes like the cafe's, hot or iced.

Buy Oregon Chai if you want smooth, sweet, and creamy, and reach for Slightly Sweet if you drink it daily.

Questions, answered

Is Oregon Chai or Tazo chai better?

Tazo Classic Chai is better if you want spice and real tea flavour; it is closer to a cafe chai and holds up iced. Oregon Chai Original is better if you want a smoother, sweeter, vanilla-and-honey latte. Both cost around $5 a carton and carry similar sugar.

Which chai concentrate has less sugar, Oregon Chai or Tazo?

The two Originals are close, roughly 20 g of sugar per 4 oz serving of concentrate. For less sugar, Oregon Chai Slightly Sweet is the best-tasting option; Tazo Skinny Chai is the other route but tastes thinner. Brewing Tazo's chai tea bags in milk avoids added sugar entirely.

Does Starbucks use Tazo or Oregon Chai?

Neither today. Starbucks used Tazo chai concentrate for years while it owned the brand, then switched to Teavana chai after selling Tazo in 2017. Tazo's Classic Chai is still the closest supermarket match to the old Starbucks chai latte.

How do you mix Oregon Chai and Tazo chai concentrate?

One part concentrate to one part milk for both, hot or over ice. Heat the milk separately rather than boiling the mixture, and use whole or oat milk for the creamiest result.

How much caffeine is in Oregon Chai and Tazo chai concentrate?

Roughly 30 to 50 mg per latte made with 4 oz of concentrate, about a third to half of a cup of coffee. Tazo also sells a decaf chai concentrate.
